Kashmir may have banned a girl band from playing. However, women have always played a major role in building the music scene that we know of today.
Some of them have gone on to gain legendary status. And then there are few who with their collective efforts have paved stardom paths for themselves. Let’s have a look at these lovely ladies who’ve made it big in the music industry!
1. Girls Aloud
Yes, Girls Aloud comprises of the same woman Cheryl Cole, who was hitched to the most promiscuous footballer ever, Ashley Cole! Albeit, that isn’t where the fame comes from. Girls Aloud was formed in 2002 through a reality TV show Popstars: The Rivals in the UK. Being the winners, Girls Aloud comprises of the best local talent in the form of singers Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberly Walsh. They went on to become one of the biggest all-girl pop group from the UK right after Spice Girls and also bagged the Guinness World Record for being the "Most Successful Reality TV Group" in history!
2. Pussycat Dolls
To put things into perspective, Pussycat Dolls’ front-woman is Nicole Scherzinger, the same one who’s having Lewis Hamilton of Formula 1 speeding behind all over the place. Formed in 2003, they gained global recognition in 2005 with their hit “Don’t Cha” and “Stickwitu”. Unfortunately though, they disbanded in 2009, but the group sold 15 million albums and 40 million singles worldwide making them one of the best-selling girl groups of all time with a total of 54 million records!
3. Destiny's Child
The vehicle that launched BeyoncĂ©’s career, Destiny’s Child played a major role in shaping up the R&B scene of today. Formed in 1990, Destiny’s Child was a locally recognized act till 1996 when they were soon signed under Columbia Records and released “The Writing’s On The Wall” and soon gained global success, and soon after there was no turning back. After going through line-up changes time and again, their final line-up in 2006 till they broke-up comprised of BeyoncĂ© Knowles, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. When they disbanded, Billboard ranked them as one of the greatest musical trios of all time and the ninth most successful artist of the 2000s!
4. TLC
A legendary act from the 90’s, TLC were hogging the starlight world over. Started off in 1900, TLC initially consisted of singer Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, rapper Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and singer Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas who found instant success with their debut album and a wider recognition with their second endeavour. Considered to be one of the greatest music trios of the new age, Billboard helmed them as the seventh most successful act of the 1990’s. TLC has sold more than 65 million records worldwide and they are ranked as the second best selling female group of all time.
5. Spice Girls
Before Victoria Beckham was known for being David Beckham’s arm-candy, she was aptly known as Posh spice. And no, it didn’t stem out of her unconditional love for spices, but because she was a part of the all girl supergroup Spice Girls! Spice Girls formed in 1994 comprised of Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice). They went on to become the biggest all girl pop band hitting the 80 million mark in term of albums sold throughout their career!
6. Honorary Mention - Lez Zeppelin
Cover bands and tribute bands are always fun to watch. They have a certain essence of fondness and reminiscence in them. Lez Zeppelin is the epitome of just that. An all girl tribute band, they pay homage to one of the greatest bands to ever conquer the earth, Led Zeppelin. Impeccable and spot-on covers and a set that’ll leave the viewers mesmerized, Lez Zeppelin packs a punch like no other. Wielding their respective instruments like war-hammers, they have definitely left a satisfying mark on a Led Zepp fan, and made them proud!
