4 Most Anticipated Hollywood 3D Films For 2013

alt
Christmas and New Year over, the nights are (very slowly) drawing out but the long summer evenings we all dream about are still a long way away.
So while you are planning what to do next on your mobile how about the cinema to while away the time? Winter and spring of 2013 are promising some exciting new releases, especially in the 3D format, so here’s a guide to the best flicks that will have you jumping out of your seat, complete with silly glasses!

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D

alt
Already released and screening across the country, this sequel follows on directly from the 1974 original. It transpires that the evil ‘Leatherface’, the chainsaw wielding maniac from the original was not killed as believed at the end of the first film. He survives and resurfaces some 20 years later to continue his killing spree.
What could have been an excuse for a huge blood-letting gore fest has been treated in a far more considered manner by director John Luessenhop. He does not over exploit the 3D effects at hand to endlessly splatter the audience in blood and body parts and relies more upon tension and implied fear, which suits the format very well.
With an 18 certificate it is certainly still no family show, but the balance of psychological and physical horror should still satisfy horror film buffs.

Escape From Planet Earth

alt
Only one teaser trailer has been released thus far for ‘Escape From Planet Earth’, an animated 3D comedy adventure in which we see astronaut Scorch Supernova, the movies brash and super confident protagonist, being interrogated in Area 51. He is plotting his escape, and that’s all we see.
As is standard with full length animations these days, the characters are voiced by an all star cast including Brendan Fraser as the hero, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker and James Galdolfini to name but a few.
Coming from a hitherto unproven studio, it remains to be seen just how well the movie hangs together. A lot will depend on the quality of the writing but from what little the preview has shown us the animation is top notch. An alien escapes the earth flick, reminiscent of Paul, this will be a film for all the family and gets its release on February 14th.

Jurassic Park 3D

alt
A re-release in 3D format next with Steven Spielberg’s highly acclaimed 90’s blockbuster being given the full three dimensional treatment. Being released on April 5th, 2013, to mark its twentieth anniversary, the film was a box office smash the first time around, netting more than nine hundred million dollars worldwide.
Based on Michael Chricton’s 1990 novel of the same name, Jurassic Park follows a group of scientists as they explore an island theme park populated by genetically re-engineered dinosaurs. The original won an Oscar for ‘Best Visual Effects’ (along with two more for best sound and best sound effects editing) and so should only be further enhanced by a three dimensional treatment. Although familiar to film buffs worldwide this re-release will no doubt garner huge interest from fans of the original as well as first time viewers.

One Direction The Concert Movie - 3D

alt
For our last selection we look a little further into the future with this film expected to be released in August 2013. It’s fair to say that there has been no escape from boyband One Direction on the radio in 2012 and the summer of 2013 offers no respite to film goers with the boys releasing a full length concert film in 3D.
Shot in a documentary style by director Morgan Spurlock, Niall Horan of the band speaking to MTV recently said -
“It's going to be a concert movie, but with a documentary side than concert side so we wanted to give it like get our personalities across because the fans know us, but we want them to know us deeper.”
Filming is already well underway and it remains to be seen what exactly the 3D format will add to the mix but one thing is for sure. 1D’s legion of fans will more or less guarantee a box office smash this summer, regardless of quality! One for the devotees for sure.
